This is an Edwardian, early 1900s large silk crepe shawl in black and salmon pink.
The bold simple and modern design features a large square of salmon pink with wide border panels of black, finished with a generous border of black silk fringing.
The super large size, in combination with the fine silk crepe material means that this piece could be easily worn around the neck as a dramatic and stylish scarf, or folded on the diagonal as a shawl or wrap.
The condition of this shawl is very good for a piece of its age, and the material is still completely strong, supple and wearable with no signs of weakness to the threads or brittle areas in the silk. The fringing is all intact, with no tangled areas, bald or threadbare spots or losses to the threads.
The salmon pink area has some areas of mild discolouration which could be inherent in the silk, but there are some areas where the black has run into faint spots and smudges around the edge. Please see close up photo for this, last image.
For a piece as old as this however, such discrepancies in my opinion are very much forgiven. And adds to the antique charm of this amazingly dramatic and historical piece.
